Corien Wortmann-Kool MEP, Vice-Chairwoman of the EPP Group responsible for economic policy, said: "This week, the Commission took a firm decision to help Greece back on track. We support this. But at the moment, we are seeing markets going down in other EU Member States. A number of EU countries have a deficit bigger than the permitted 3%. We see this situation also reflected in a drop of the exchange rate of the Euro to currently 1,3689 dollars. For the EPP Group, there is a strong sense of urgency to hold this debate as soon as possible. I think we should debate this issue and I do not see why other groups in Parliament want to prevent this from happening."
Jean-Paul Gauzès MEP, EPP Group Coordinator in the Economic and Monetary Affairs Committee of the European Parliament, said: "In its current situation, what Greece needs more than ever is market credibility. This credibility will allow it to find the necessary financing to get out of the crisis. But Greece is not the only country with problems."
