| THE EUROPEAN PARLIAMENT SETS OUT NEW RULES ON ASYLUM POLICY | A package of measures to improve the way the EU asylum system works and strengthening asylum seekers' rights has been adopted today by the European Parliament. MEPs adopted amendments to enhance solidarity between Member States when managing asylum applications, and call for a binding mechanism to be set up before 2012.

| EUROPEAN PARLIAMENT'S ANALYSIS OF THE LISBON TREATY | A comprehensive review of the European Union's new institutional structure, should the Lisbon Treaty be ratified in 2009, as foreseen by the December 2008 European Council, was approved by the European Parliament on Thursday. The report, drafted by Jo Leinen (PES, DE) on the "New tasks and responsibilities of the EP for the implementation of the Lisbon Treaty" was approved by 441 votes in favour, 77 against and 18 abstentions.

| NO AGREEMENT ON REFORM OF TELECOM LEGISLATION | User's Internet access cannot be restricted without prior ruling by the judicial authorities, insists the European Parliament reinstating one of its first-reading amendments. By amending an informal agreement reached with Council, MEPs send the whole "telecom package" to conciliation.
